NEWS FROM YOUR TOWN MANAGER “KATIE”

Hope this newsletter finds you ready for the summers season.* If you have traveled on Route 27 toward Rome, you have noticed that construction is about to begin. Farrin Brothers are the successful contractors for this project. They should be working until the end of September, weather permitting. The 75 year old elm tree (located in the D.O.T. right-of-way) has been taken down, and the lumber is now at Tukey’s saw mill. Many thanks to Tukey’s for storing and drying this wood for us. We are hoping to use this wood for projects throughout our Town. It has been suggested that suitability of this wood lends itself to interior, rather than exterior use. At this time, the Library Committee is exploring ways to utilize this wood for a table and shelves in the library in the new Center for All Seasons. If you have any ideas for a project which would somehow benefit a facility in this town, please contact me. This wood will be used on a first come, first serve basis.* Construction is moving along with the new recreation center. This project is a couple of weeks behind schedule due to the weather. We, in conjunction with Michael Little, representing the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance, have been turning our thoughts to landscaping on the left side of the property. The Town of Belgrade has applied for a grant that would help us with this endeavor. If anyone has some landscaping talents, please contact Bill Getty or myself. Also, one of our visions is to search for a landscape architect to help us with this project. If this is your profession, and you do not advertise, please let us know that you exist! * We have received 18 applications for the Recreation Director position. Interviews will begin on June 22nd.* Has anyone seen the safety cones which re placed in the crosswalks in the Village every year? They are nowhere to be found.* The Planning Board is in need of two individuals to serve as alternates on this committee. We are entering the busiest time of the year for this board due to the abundance of application for building permits and the drafting of a Site Review Ordinance. If you would like to provide input in these processes, please give Bert Languet or me a call.* The Appeals Board is still in need of a member and also an individual to take notes from taped conservations during a hearing.

We have two new members of our Select board. Congratulations to Kate Gawler and Roger Nadeau.! Enjoy the fair weather. Be well!

BELGRADE PUBLIC LIBRARY MEETINGS & BOOK SALE

Now that the Library Ordinance has been passed, the Belgrade Public Library is a legal part of our town. Trustee nominations will be presented to the Board of Selectpersons for appointment this month. The present Library Committee will probably finish its work as it meets with the new Board of Trustees this summer for orientation purposes. Policy and governance decisions will be made by the Board of Trustees as soon as that Board is legally constituted. Current meetings are focused on the technology of library operations. Joan Hassam and Steve Symonds bring much-needed computer and teli-communications expertise to this stage of the planning. We thank them for their willingness to help. Throughout the summer, as physical walls are completed, the Committee and Trustees will complete the procedural framework within which the library will operate. Policies will be finished in draft form for consideration by the Board of Trustees. A part-time Library Director will be hired for the last quarter of the year. Library Committee members see an ongoing need for volunteers. A Friends-of-the-Library group can help with such things as the physical set-up and furnishing, book preparation, and community programming (like story hour or study groups). We invite you to attend our meetings, and PLEASE WATCH FOR OUR BOOK SALE .

FROM THE OFFICE OF KENNEBEC COUNTY SHERRIFF

The Kennebec County Triad is re-establishing its activities in Kennebec County. A Triad is a three-way commitment among the Chiefs of Police, the Sheriff and older retired leaders in the county. They work together to reduce the criminal victimization of the elderly and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to older persons.

This program is already well established in several Maine counties, with Kennebec County being the first. Kennebec’s senior citizens can have the opportunity to benefit from TRIAD services as well. Kennebec’s TRIAD is fortunate to have a high participation rate from the law enforcement sector, with strong leadership from the Sheriff’s Office as well as regular representation from the majority of local police agencies.

We are just getting re-established and have a lot to do. We hope that you can assist us by selecting a volunteer from your community to serve on the TRIAD Council. Please notify me with the name and address of your representative either by phone 623-3614 x 210, email ebflannery@cji.net, or written correspondence to the Sheriff’s Office at the address below.

Respectfully submitted from

Major Everett B. Flannery, Jr.
Chief Deputy
125 State Street
Augusta, Maine 04330
